Documentary Master Class by Oscar-winning Director Ruby Yang
Documentary filmmaking is a significant tool to capture reality and provide important historical records to facilitate our understanding of the world. In the documentaries made by Oscar winning director Ruby Yang, we see stories of people with diverse backgrounds—from children in the remote villages of Anhui Province, China, who have lost their parents to AIDS; to budding musicians of Asia. Through film appreciation and discussion, participants will learn not only the aesthetics of documentary, but also catch a glimpse of some important events in history.

The Blood of Yingzhou District 《潁州的孩子》
USA/China | 2006 | 39 min | In Chinese with English subtitles
Gao Jun, the child featured in The Blood of Yingzhou District, does not speak a word until the closing minutes of the film. Little is known about him, not even his age. Yet the AIDS orphan’s search for a home to call his own forms the dramatic centre of this documentary set in rural China, directed by Ruby Yang and produced by Thomas Lennon. In February 2007, the film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary - Short Subject.

In Search of Perfect Consonance 《尋找完美第五度》
Hong Kong | 2016 | 38 min | In English, Cantonese, Mandarin & Japanese with English subtitles
In the late 1980s, China was at war with Vietnam, the Chinese and the Japanese were at loggerheads, and relations across the Taiwan Strait were frosty. Directed by Ruby Yang, In Search of Perfect Consonance profiles the Asian Youth Orchestra, established against this historical backdrop with the aim of connecting the region’s young people through music. As we watch the budding musicians of today’s Asia learn to work together, we are reminded of the higher ideals that music inspires.
